A wonderful book that is proving once again that some, if maybe very few, Westerners are fully capable of grasping most intricacies of China, quite unlike the usual way most Unitedstatesians see our Motherland. Maybe the fact that the author is not only from the Western hemipshere (even though he is Canadian) but also from an old culture of Europe helps create the magic moments, surprises, thrills and suspense which these short stories are full of.I was fascinated with all the stories, from the foreign man and Chinese woman romance in the 1900s Guangzhou to the Sino-Macanese ladyboy and his European lover in the 2010s Macau, from the mystery of the disappearing Czech-British diplomat in Hong Kong in the 1960s to the tenderness of the Chinese ballet dancer in Nanning in the 1990s.
All these characters are very skillfully developped in such a short collection that they stay with us throughout and we wonder if each of them will reappear in another story, especially as the family feast at a Chinese merchant's house seems connected to the initial piece about the diplomat's child's future.
The final story allows us to glimpse the life of a foreign teacher in China -- which may or may not be the author's own character -- as it finely concludes this collection the only problem with which we may have is that it is all too short. We are waiting impatiently for future works by Mr. Miodrag, as I am sure it will be getting a huge readership in China Herself once it is translated to Chinese, which it should be.

An excellent story, nicely and wisely crafted... It seems that bad comments came from someone who didn't read it... recommended to all who wish to travel and experience otherness...
