The Elemental Logic series is shaping up to be one of those book series where I’m a fan of the characters and the world but not at all of the plot.

Earth Logic is the second in the Elemental Logic series, a fantasy series set in a world without sexism or heteronormativity. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, you should probably start with the first book, Fire Logic.

This is usually the point in the review where I give a basic plot synopsis. However, I’m not really sure what the plot of Earth Logic is? Karis is the G’deon, and it’s her responsibility to rule and care for the nation of Shaftal, which is currently invaded by foreigners, the Sainnites. The occupation needs to be ended, but the entire plan for this revolves around vague prophecies which make no sense to me. Have I mentioned how much I hate fantasy books where the entire plot is based off prophecy?

Anyway, the prophecy says that if Shaftal is to be saved, Zanja must be dead. That’s literally all the information given, and the characters decide to act on this? I have no idea how the entire Zanja plot line is at all relevant to the book!

In reflection, it felt like not a lot happened in Earth Logic, especially when it comes to the chapters concerning the characters from Fire Logic. There’s some angsting over what to do about the Zanja prophecy. There’s lots of sitting around and talking. There’s lots of Karis doing nothing. Is it any surprise that my favorite character in this book was one of the new POV characters, Clement, who seemed like the only person in the book actually doing things?

Clement is a high placed officer of the Sainnites who was brought to the country of Shaftal by her adoptive soldier mother when she was a child. She also is one of the few people who know just how bad thing are looking for the Sainnites. Basically, demographics are not in their favor. Since all of the Sainnites are soldiers, they have very few children. And what children they do manage to raise up inevitably become new soldiers and tend to get killed in rather short order.

I still like the characters of this series. I still like that it’s set in a world where queer relationships are normal and no one raises an eye at women doing things or holding positions of authority. But while I really liked Fire Logic, I found Earth Logic disappointing. I don’t know if I’ll be continuing with this series.

Unfortunately, I couldn't ever get into this book. I liked the protagonist well enough, although her actions and motivations were as puzzling as her eclectic group of friends. I couldn't quite make sense of why one of the characters had to die--other than having the feeling that they should! And the events that happened as a result never fell into place for me, either.

Now, I do understand that Things Were At Work and Needed to Happen That Way and it was all subtle and marvelous--I'm not THAT dense! But I just never related to any of it The world, the characters, the events, the motivations...

It's not badly written. I'm sure others may find this an enjoyable book. I can't in conscience give it a very low mark because of my own odd lack of interest. I must say that it is rare that I don't 'grok' a book, but it happens.

... I did like the cover painting a lot! I think it is by Rowena--one of her best.
I am an avid reader ... and therefore know the difference between well-written and casual trash. This series was awesome. Consistent carry through from one book to the next without much review. Each one can stand alone but they are wonderful in sequence. Loved the theme of elemental nature carried to extreme. Loved the way the end resolved itself. I read one review talking about how it was a 'gay' book ... no ... it is a tolerant-of-all book. All kinds of relationships within this book series and if for no other reason than this, it is a welcome perspective. Terrific fantasy/science fiction/natural healing story.
I just discovered Laurie J. Marks and---publishers take heed--I want to read more of her works. She creates a cast of complex and varied characters, puts them in impossible situations, and lets us watch as the characters either work their way out of the mess or suffer the consequences. Dialog and description are detailed so that I felt I was really present in her world. And even though the situation is often grim, happiness and hilarity often break through so that the reader doesn't feel they are sinking into quicksand. Read Fire Logic first, then this Earth Logic, and then Water Logic. I am still waiting for someone to publish what must be Air Logic but be assured that each book solves its own plot crisis even though the characters and overall situation continue through the series.
Another great book in this complex and interesting series. Well written and lots of twists and turns.

When I reached the end of the book it felt like the series had been resolved and everyone was headed for their happily ever after but the author has made things way more complex than that. All the characters have finally had resolution so now it is time for some new characters and new complexities in the next book. These books are full of politics so they require your full attention to follow what is going on so don't expect too easy a read.

The only negative for me is the little "folk" stories embedded throughout. Somewhat like a lot of early American Indian legends, these did not add anything to the book for me at all. However, other readers will probably love these little tidbits.

There is a limited amount of action in this book and it is about peaceful resolutions and political resolutions so don't expect a lot of tactical planning or war games.

For me, one of the things I love about these books are the characters. They are all damaged so there is a lot of complexity to them that you don't find in a lot of books. Don't expect handsome hero's and beautiful heroines where everything just falls into place. Expect angst, pain, and true heroism.

Highly recommended reading for anyone who loves fantasy/adventure. Looking forward to book 3.
